Gulf african bank launches new pilgrims product With the islamic hajj pilgrimage edging closer, kenyan muslims have a reason to smile. The gulf african bank has partnered with qatar airways to launch a new product which is designed for the customers who intend to go for the hajj pilgrimage in mecca, saudi arabia - one of the fundamental compulsory pillars of islam. The new account package, hajj saving account, will have additional benefits for the pilgrim such special air fare rates with the qatar airline together with a complimentary stopover in doha, qatar. The Gulf African Bank has partnered with Qatar Airways in providing additional service to customers who intend to travel to Mecca for the annual Hajj pilgrimage. The new Hajj Savings Account offers discounted air fare rates with the Qatar Airline. The Gulf African Bank Chief Executive Officer, Najmun Hassan, said that the account holder will also enjoy high profits and pre-travel information. He further pointed out that one can start saving immediately even if he/she intended go for Hajj later in life. Qatar Airway sales manager, Agnes Kamatu, indicated that the airline operates five weekly flights to Jeddah and Doha, a service that will simplify travel and accommodation logistics surrounding the pilgrimage. Supreme Council of Kenyan Muslims’, National organizing Secretary, Sharif Hussein was also present and reminded that the registration for the account so as to be eligible is on the 15th October, while issuing of visas by the Saudi Arabian Embassy will end on 23nd November this year.

| The kenya peace truth and justice lobby group (kptj) on friday came under fire at the kriegler led-independent review commission probing last year’s acrimonious elections. The group was put to task to explain why they termed last year’s general election as fraud, yet they had not perused through all eck’s electoral documents. A report titled ‘countdown to deception- 30 hours that destroyed kenya’ which was released by the group back in january this year, came under heavy scrutiny at the enquiry. The lobby group presented a report titled analysis on election results at the commission. The lobby group KPTJ told the Kriegler team that they followed the release of the results from the local media and compared them with those of the ECK’s before arriving at the decision that fraud was committed. This decision by the group was questioned and the commission and the chair, retired Justice, Johann Kriegler sought clarity. However, the answer proved not to be satisfactory ….The witness Dr. Kanyingi stuck to his guns….The integrity of the report, countdown to deception, which was published in January by KPTJ was questioned by the commission which forced the lawyer of the lobby group come to their defence. The commission’s chair said that he did not insinuate that the group was responsible for causing public unrest, but was only sought clarity to the contents of the document. |

| 29/08/08: COCKER COMMISSION SUMMONS MINISTERS MPS |
Cocker commission summons ministers, mps Members of parliament ababu namwamba and bonnie khalwale will appear before the cocker commission investigating the controversial sale of the grand regency hotel. The two were the movers of a motion in parliament seeking to censure former finance minister amos kimunya over the clandestine sale. Other parliamentarians who will appear at the commission include james orengo (the lands minister) and his nairobi metropolitan development minister, mutula kilonzo. Activists, aaron ndubi and ann njogu are also lined up to appear before the task force. Professor githu muigai appearing for kimunya requested for their summon. The lot are now set to appear before the commission and present their evidence which implicates the former minister. Earlier the cockar commission was told that no profit was recorded by grand regency hotel during the receivership period, contrary to thursday's submission that the hotel made a profit of over 341million shillings. Apparently, upon sale of the hotel to the new owners, it had accumulated liabilities of over 476 million shillings due to unpaid taxes and failure to remit funds for its employees.

| 28/08/08: MULTINATIONAL COMPUTER SOFTWARE ANNONCED 40% REDUCTION |
Multinational computer software manufacturer, microsoft, has announced a 40% reduction on student user software in an effort to boost software usage among the students in the region. David ndung’u, the marketing manager of microsoft east and southern africa, indicated that the company is strategizing on ways to best fight the now rampant software piracy that has cost the company heavily. Ndung’u however added that microsoft will maintain its delivery high quality products to the market.David Ndung’u, Marketing Manager of Microsoft Company in East and Southern Africa, has announced a 40% reduction on computer software used by students in selected countries within the region. Addressing the media at a Nairobi hotel, Ndung’u acknowledged the high competition the company was facing and promised to guard their market share in the region. At the same time Ian Joule, the Channel Manager of Microsoft East and Southern Africa, reiterated that although the company’s new products are aimed at maximizing profits, the company still wanted to remain relevant in the volatile market. Locally, the company has been involved in organizing computer software user groups to find out how best to develop products that suit the needs of the local market. Meanwhile, the company is currently working on a project assisting tea farmers on the usage of computers in their day to day transactions.

| 28/08/08: CLIMATE CHANGE AFFECTS MILLIONS OF PEOPLE |
| The adverse effect of climate change on the environment and water catchment areas around mt. Kenya region has affected millions of people at lower altitude areas and the ecosystem at large. Assistant minister in the ministry of environment and mineral resources, jackson kiptanui, attributed the climate change to the illegal settlement in mau forest catchment areas which leads to deforestation. The climatic change taking its toll on the country has been attributed to the illegal settlement in water catchment areas like Mau forest, Mt. Elgon and the Aberdare ranges. The assistant minister in the ministry of environment and Mineral resources, Jackson Kiptanui, reiterated people living at lower areas were the ones who were most affected. Speaking on behalf of the Minister, John Michuki, Kiptanui indicated that there was need to introduce measures that will preserve and conserve the environment for posterity while at the same time benefiting the people who utilize the country’s natural resources. Kiptanui further observed that for the country to slow down the pace of the climate change and its severe global warming impact, Kenyans should adopt the Clean Development Mechanisms (CDMs). The Assistant minister was speaking during the official opening of the 22nd greater horn of Africa climate outlook forum at a Nairobi Hotel. The forum will seek intervention measures against adverse impacts on all climate social economic sectors. |
